  • We find the source of the leak

    Water travels along joists and pipes. The plumber traces it back to the leak before repairing, so no wall gets opened for nothing.

  • A written report for your insurer

    We can give you a written report describing the cause and the repair, useful for your claim or for your landlord.

  • Our own plumbers, work guaranteed

    The repair is done by a plumber from our team, never a subcontractor, and covered by a written guarantee on labour and parts.

Water leak: shut off the water first

Close the main shut-off, stay clear of electricity, then call: in that order, these moves limit the damage while the plumber is on the way.

  1. Close the main water shut-off. It is usually in the basement, on the pipe that comes through the foundation wall, often near the meter if there is one. Turn it clockwise all the way. If the leak is local, under a sink or behind a toilet, the small shut-off valve on that fixture is often enough.
  2. Switch off the power to affected rooms if water is near outlets or light fixtures, and only if the panel is dry.
  3. Drain the remaining pressure by opening a tap at the lowest point in the house.
  4. Document and protect. Take photos before moving anything, mop up what you can and, if a ceiling is bulging with water, poke a small hole with a bucket underneath so it doesn’t give way all at once.

Find your shut-off today, before you need it. The valve outside, under the sidewalk, is not meant for homeowners: in Montréal, only people employed by the City are authorized to handle it.

The water leaks we repair

Our plumbers repair small drips as well as burst pipes. These are the most common cases.

  • Supply lines

    Pipes with pinholes or cracks, in copper, plastic or galvanized steel, under sinks as well as inside walls.

  • Faucets, fittings and joints

    Taps, shut-off valves and appliance connections that drip. When a faucet or valve is too worn to be worth repairing again, we install new fixtures instead.

  • Burst pipes

    Often after a hard freeze, when ice has split the line. Shut off the water first, then call us right away. Our page on frozen pipes covers that case in detail.

  • Leaking water heaters

    Repaired, or replaced when the tank itself is leaking: see our water heater page.

How can you spot a hidden leak?

Not every leak shows right away. A rising bill, bubbling paint or a hiss inside the walls are often the first clues. Watch for:

  • a water bill or meter that keeps moving while nothing is running;
  • bubbling paint, swelling plaster or tile grout turning dark;
  • a musty smell that won’t leave a closet or basement;
  • a steady hiss inside the walls when the house is quiet.

In Montréal, the City asks residents to report right away to 311 water seeping into the basement or through the walls, an unusual whistling or vibration in the pipes, or a sudden leak after a freeze or thaw: these can also come from the public side of the water service.

How our plumbers find the source

Water follows joists, pipes and wires, and the stain often shows up far from the leak. To avoid opening a wall in the wrong place, our plumbers work in four steps:

  1. We start from the stain. Given where it is, the plumber checks the most likely sources first: a worn tub seal, a shower fitting, a drain letting water through or a pinhole in a supply line.
  2. We check what is within reach. Fixtures, fittings and valves are checked before anything gets opened.
  3. We isolate sections. The piping is isolated section by section to confirm where the water comes from.
  4. We explain, then repair. You see what was found before any repair starts. You pay once the leak is fixed, and we can give you a written report.

How much does a plumber charge to fix a leak?

It depends on where the leak is, how easy the pipe is to reach and what the repair involves. Replacing the cartridge in a dripping tap or tightening a fitting under a sink is a small job. A hidden leak in a wall or under a floor means finding the source first, then opening as little as possible to repair the damaged section. An old copper pipe with pinholes in several places may be worth replacing as a whole section rather than patching again and again. On the phone we look at the situation with you and confirm the price before sending the plumber.

  • The price is confirmed before we head out, day or night.
  • No obligation: you decide once you know the price.
  • Evenings, weekends and holidays included.
  • You pay once the leak is repaired and tested.

Plumber or restoration company?

They are two different trades. The plumber stops the leak and repairs the plumbing. A restoration company dries out materials, deals with mould risk and rebuilds. The two often work one after the other.

For your claim, the insurer will want to know what caused the water damage, and a plumber’s written report on the cause makes that easier. A wastewater problem rather than clean water? See our page on sewer backups. For anything else urgent outside business hours, our 24/7 emergency plumbing page explains what to do first.

Common questions about water leaks

(438) 379-2352
Who should I call for an emergency water leak?

A plumber, to stop the water and repair the pipe. In Montréal, the City also asks residents to report to 311 water seeping through basement walls or a whistling noise in the pipes, which can point to a problem on the public side. Then notify your insurer, and your landlord if you rent.

How do I keep a leak from coming back?

Turn the water back on slowly after the repair and keep a close eye on the area. Let opened walls dry before closing them up. If the leak came from an ageing part, replacing a seized shut-off valve or a worn washing machine hose costs far less than a second round of water damage.

Is a dripping tap worth fixing?

Yes. A dripping tap wastes water around the clock, and the wear behind the leak usually gets worse. Most of the time, a worn cartridge or washer is all it takes. If the faucet is at the end of its life, we can install a new one during the same visit.

Do you dry out and rebuild after water damage?

No. Our work is to stop the leak and repair the plumbing. To dry out materials and rebuild walls or floors, your insurer will usually refer you to a restoration company. We can give you a written report describing the cause and the repair.

How can I tell if I have a hidden leak?

Turn off every tap and appliance, then watch the water meter if you have one, or listen to the pipes in a quiet house. A moving dial or a steady hiss means water is flowing somewhere. Stains, bubbling paint and a musty smell are other clues.
