Drains that keep clogging

Hydro jetting for drains and sewer lines

Hydro jetting cleans the inside of a pipe with a high-pressure stream of water. Where a drain snake punches a hole through a clog, the nozzle scours the whole pipe wall and flushes grease, build-up, sand and roots down to the sewer. It is the answer when a drain blocks again every few weeks. Our plumbers handle hydro jetting, and the price is confirmed before we head out.

What is hydro jetting?

It is a pipe cleaning done with water under high pressure. The plumber feeds a flexible hose through a cleanout, in the basement or outside. At the end of the hose, a nozzle fires jets pointed backwards, which pull it forward through the pipe, and sometimes one jet pointed forward that breaks up the clog. As it is slowly drawn back, the nozzle scours the wall all the way around.

It is not just a stronger unclogging. A snake reopens a path through the clog, but it leaves the layer of grease or scale stuck to the pipe, where debris catches again. The water jet removes that layer. The line gets its full width back, and the loosened debris flows to the sewer with the water. For a drain blocked once by an object or hair, regular drain cleaning is often enough.

When do you need high-pressure cleaning?

Several signs show that the problem is in the line itself, not just in a trap:

  • the same drain blocks again a few weeks after every cleaning;
  • several fixtures drain slowly at once, for example the basement shower and toilet;
  • gurgling comes from a drain when the tub or the washer empties;
  • a sewer smell lingers in the basement, even after the traps are cleaned;
  • water comes up through the floor drain when the washer empties;
  • roots have been removed from your sewer line before.

What the water jet removes

Each kind of build-up calls for its own nozzle and its own way of working. Here is what we find most often in household lines.

  • Kitchen grease

    Cooking grease and oil set as they cool. They coat the wall of the kitchen drain and the main line and hold on to everything that passes. It is the most common build-up in homes, and the one the water jet removes best.

  • Scale and sand

    Scale, soap, sludge and sand slowly form a hard layer at the bottom of the pipe. The flow drops little by little, until a clog forms one day. High-pressure cleaning scours this build-up away without digging.

  • Roots

    Tree roots get in through a joint or a crack in the sewer line, drawn by the moisture, then grow inside the pipe. A nozzle made to cut them slices them up and flushes them out. They will grow back as long as the opening is there: a drain camera inspection shows where they get in.

  • Wipes and other debris

    Wipes, even the ones sold as “flushable”, do not break down. They catch on build-up and roots and form stubborn clogs that the water jet can flush out.

Before cleaning: the condition of the line

High pressure is safe for a line in good condition, but an old pipe deserves a check. Older houses often have a cast iron sewer line, sometimes eaten away from the inside, or clay pipe whose joints have shifted. A crushed or broken section should not get full pressure.

That is why the plumber starts by looking at the material, age and access points of the line, then adapts the nozzle and the pressure. If a break is suspected, the plumber suggests looking with the camera first. The other way around, a dirty drain often needs cleaning before a video inspection, so the picture shows the pipe wall rather than the build-up. In Montréal, the City in fact asks owners to have the drain cleaned and roots removed before the video inspection that goes with a repair request.

How the visit goes

  1. The first call. You tell us which drain is blocking, since when, and what has been tried. The price is confirmed before we head out, with no obligation.
  2. The check. The plumber finds the cleanouts, checks the material and condition of the line, and chooses the nozzle and the pressure.
  3. The cleaning. The nozzle travels to the end of the blocked section, then comes back slowly while scouring the wall. The debris flows to the sewer with the water.
  4. The test and your tips. The plumber runs water at each fixture involved to check the flow, then explains what came out and what will help prevent another clog. You pay once the job is done, and it is covered by a written guarantee.

How much does hydro jetting cost?

The price depends on the length of line to clean, what is blocking it and how easy it is to reach. A kitchen drain coated with grease is not the same job as a sewer line full of roots all the way to the street.

Keeping your lines clean longer

A well-cleaned line stays clear for a long time if you avoid sending down what blocks it. Let cooking grease set in a container, then put it in the right bin instead of the sink. Flush only toilet paper: wipes, dental floss and hygiene products don’t belong in the drain. Put a strainer on the shower drain to catch hair.

In Montréal, owners are responsible for maintaining the entire sewer connection of their building, up to the municipal sewer under the street, which includes cutting roots, even under public property. If your line has had roots before, a preventive cleaning saves you from waiting for the next clog. And if dirty water is already coming up in the basement, see our page on sewer backups.

Common questions about high-pressure drain cleaning

(438) 379-2352
What is the difference between a drain snake and hydro jetting?

A snake is a rotating cable that punches through the clog and reopens a path. It works well for a one-off blockage. A water jet cleans the wall along the whole length of the pipe, which also removes the grease and build-up that catch debris. That is why it is used when the same drain keeps clogging.

Can high-pressure water damage my pipes?

Not a pipe in good condition. On a very old, cracked or sagging line, the pressure has to be adjusted, and it is sometimes better to look with a camera first. That is why the plumber checks the age, material and condition of the line before starting.

Does hydro jetting fix a root problem for good?

It cuts and flushes out the roots that grew into the pipe, and the drain flows freely again. But roots get in through a joint or a crack, and they will grow back as long as that opening is there. A camera inspection shows where they get in, so you can decide whether that section needs repair.

Do you use chemicals?

No. The cleaning uses water under pressure only. Please don't pour chemical drain openers before we arrive either; they damage some pipes and make the plumber's job riskier.

Do I need to be home during the cleaning?

Someone needs to let us in and show where the cleanouts are, often in the basement. We work for tenants as well as owners.
